My Digital Discovery Story

8 years ago a friend turned me onto a podcast by the name of Internet Business Mastery. At the time, I had just finished my degree in Physical Health and Education at the University of Toronto. School had provided me with a wealth of knowledge in human anatomy, athletic conditioning, psychology, and pedagogy. My exposure to business management and stats/data analytics, however, was minimal. Even worse, my understanding of computer science and coding was essentially nonexistent.

My digital literacy was comprised of knowing how to use WindowsXP, Microsoft Office, and Facebook 😅. Needless to say, most of what the podcast had to offer was going right over my head. On average, it would take me 3 listens of each episode before even trying to implement what it was covering. It was a solid 4 months of trial and error but in those first 4 months of my digital discovery these are the 4 key things I learned that have been foundational.

  1. Finding and bookmarking educational resources you can refer to for learning and keeping up to date with new trends.
    – Youtube
    – Google alerts
    – Newsletters
    – Thought leaders
    – E-learning sites
    – Attending workshops
  2. How to get online
    – Buy a domain
    – Get a hosting provider
    – Determine how you will build/manage your website using a content management system.
    – Setup your email management system
  3. How to promote and market online
    – Leveraging social media and building an online network
    – Content curation
    – Online branding
  4. How to track and monitor
    – Google analytics
    – Social media metrics
    – Search engine optimization and Search engine marketing

The key thing is to not let any of this intimidate you. It’s actually easy to setup. The hard part is getting good in applying best practices but that’s an ongoing process so don’t sweat it.
